Insulation scheme could mean huge savings on bills
April 2009
An ambitious new project is offering residents across Somerset the opportunity to cut their energy bills and save money.
Warm Streets is a new joint project between the Centre for Sustainable Energy (CSE), the local councils in Somerset and Scottish and Southern Energy aimed at supporting those who are struggling to pay their fuel bills and help people make substantial savings.
As the credit crunch is continuing to affect many families and with fuel prices still high, the project is offering free insulation to low-income households, householders in receipt of benefits and people aged over 70 (some restrictions may apply).
Discounted loft and cavity wall insulation is available to everyone, as well as free and impartial energy saving advice. People will also be able to find out about various ways to lower their heating and electricity bills, as well as ensuring they are getting all of their entitlement in income benefits.
Helen Richardson, project manager, said:
“Warm Streets is about helping everybody across the district to save money on their energy bills. For example, low income households will have the opportunity for additional financial support which will, in many cases, lead to insulation being installed for free.
Reducing energy bills isn’t just about helping people keep warm during the winter, it’s about reducing them all year around. It’s also about maximising people’s income so they are able to afford their fuel bills and not go without food or clothing.”
Many people aren’t aware of the effect home insulation can have on helping to reduce their costs, and that people can save up to one third of their heating bill.
