Press release from Quantock Hills AONB office
Make money from your woodland, and help the environment
Farmers and landowners who own small woodlands may be interested in two free events being held in December to show how woodlands can be managed economically, and sustainably so that an income can be generated from them. The events ‘Managing farm woodland for woodfuel production’ will have a range of expert speakers and demonstrations and will provide all the information a landowner or farmer needs to know to enter the growing market for woodfuel.
The first event is being held on the Cothlestone Estate on the Quantock Hills on 7th December at 10am. The day will be hosted by Hugh Warmington of the Cothelstone Estate, and will look at their modern log boiler that has been installed to heat the estate buildings, using fuel from it’s own woodland. The day’s presentations will use the estate activities to illustrate aspects of woodland management, woodfuel harvesting, processing and supply. Practical sessions will also be provided, looking at woodland management activities, wood processing machinery and log boiler demonstrations.
The Silvanus Trust is organising the event and will provide a detailed information pack on the day. Presentations will also be given by Forest Fuels, The Forestry Commission and Natural England, who are funding the event. The Quantock Hills AONB Service will chair the day.
Will Frost, from the Silvanus Trust says:
“This event is essential for anyone who wishes to generate an income from their woodland, and also improve it’s biodiversity. The day covers everything from how to harvest and market the wood, to where you can access grants.”
Lunch and refreshments will be provided throughout the day. The event is free to attend but please book a place with The Silvanus Trust on 01579 372100.
For those that can’t make this date, the second event is being held at River Cottage HQ, Park Farm in Devon on 18th December.
