News release from Hinkley Point A
Bridgwater MP Ian Liddell-Grainger has praised the contribution
Hinkley Point A Power Station continues to make to the local community.
As well as contributing many years of successful generation, the
site has put many hundreds of millions of pounds into the local
economy and even during decommissioning it continues to plough
an estimated £20m a year into the community.
Mr Liddell-Grainger was speaking at one of Hinkley Point A’s
bi-annual business breakfasts attended by more than 50 representatives
from companies, education, local authorities and other organisations.
The MP has taken a close interest in the decommissioning of Hinkley
Point A which closed in 2000 and is managed by British Nuclear
Group Reactor Sites. He told the audience at the Walnut Tree Hotel,
North Petherton: “On every visit to the site I have never
failed to be impressed by both the quality of the staff and the
work that goes on there.”
Terry Selby, strategy co-ordinator with the site’s owners,
the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), explained the recent
draft strategy published by the NDA for consultation. The strategy
sets out proposals for dealing with the UK’s civil nuclear
legacy – including Hinkley Point A.
He urged people to read the document (available on the website:
www.nda.gov.uk) and send comments in to the NDA by 11 November.
Mr Selby explained that the new proposals for Hinkley Point A
suggested site clearance within 25 years and the NDA would be seeking
the views of stakeholders on the site end state and when this should
be achieved.
