All afternoon the sound of sirens echoed around the eastern side of the
Quantocks. The first major fire on the hills this year. The good weather
has made conditions on the hills very dry, and what started as a small
fire, quickly spread across approximately 30acres, (the figure varied
up to about 40 acres, depending on which fireman you spoke to!) Appliances
were called from as far away as Cheddar.
If any of the firemen would like to supply more details about this, or fires in general on the hills just drop us a line. Without the courageous and regular efforts of these fire fighters we would certainly lose a considerable amount of habit in this area of outstanding natural beauty.
People using the hills should remember to be aware how easily a major fire can start. Always take home rubbish and be careful discarding cigarettes and matches.
